Thangal General Temple, built in 1879, is a beautiful shrine located in Wangkhei locality of
Imphal, the capital city of
Manipur. It is attributed to Kangabam Chitananda Singh popular as Thangal General, who built this temple.
Thangal General was one of the most prominent heroes of the Anglo-Manipur war 1891. He was a prominent figure in the court of Maharaj Kulachandra. The British sentenced him to death for waging war against the Queen and abetment of the murder of British officers.
Thangal General Temple conforms to the Bengal style of architecture. The dome and the decoration of the barrier, made of rails, in the temple reflect the Islamic influence. Spread over an area of 650 sq m, the temple stands on a distinct platform, which can be approached by flights of steps.
The pedestal of the temple is square shaped. The sanctum cube of the internal sanctum (garbh griha) and the outer jacket is raised straight up from the base up to the moulding cornice. The outer jacket wall on each side of the temple leads to the pradakshina path (the circumambulatory path). There is an inverted kalasa placed at the top of the temple.
