Thanela lies in the northern region of Chamba District. Tissa, at an altitude of about 1,570 m, is around 8 km east. Chamba, the district headquarters, is roughly 65 km south.

Gamgul Sanctuary (a high-altitude sanctuary) and Bhandal Valley are nearby.
