Mainly performed by the Thiyas, Thalamkali is a prevalent art form in
Malappuram District. It was popular during the celebration of Thalikettu - a ritual in which the young girls who attain puberty go through a mock marriage. In Thalamkali, the performers stand in circle and sing to a rhythm. Then they carry plates in both palms and a pot full of water on the head, and go through intricate twisting and turning.
