Thaara, the Divehi word for tambourine, is one of the popular dance forms of
Minicoy Island. It is performed by a group of men seated in two parallel rows facing each other. The performers wear white sarongs and white shirts with a green scarf tied around their necks. The performance is accompanied by Arabic songs. The songs start with a very slow tempo and gradually increase to reach a crescendo. This group dance is performed mainly during festivals and special occasions.
