Perhaps the first of its kind in the world, Teak Museum is in the north
Kerala district of
Malappuram. It is a sub-center of Kerala Forest Research Institute. Teak Museum is situated at a distance of 4 km from
Nilambur.
The museum is a double storied building, holding all information about teak. Various methods of seed-grading, pre-sowing treatment, preparation of teak stumps, vegetative propagation of teak, and different stages of teak from seed to mature tree are displayed in the museum. It also exhibits a miniature model of sailing vessel, called Uru, made of teak wood.
The large stump of a 480-year old teak tree brought from Nagarampara forest division is preserve here. The museum also houses a collection of over 300 butterflies, moths and insects, which are found in teak plantations. Paintings portraying tree felling operations, photographs on phonological events of teak, traditional harvesting tools, and wood samples of different ages from various parts of the world are also exhibited here.
