Tamil Town is an old town which is developed around a group of temples in the northern region of
Pondicherry. The buildings along the streets are characterized by verandahs and extended porches. The buildings may be green, blue or brown in color and are closely placed together. These are either single storeyed ones of the old Hindu quarters, or more recent double storeyed ones. The buildings are classic examples of Tamil architecture.
Usually, the ground floors of two-storeyed Tamil buildings have a thinnai (portico), thalvaram (a social extension of the house) and carved doors, while the first floor usually displays French influence with pilasters, arched windows, plaster decorations and ornate elements.
The nearest airport is at Chennai. The nearest railway station is Pondicherry Railway Station.
