Swatantrya Jyot

Flame of Freedom

Swatantrya Jyot is the second structure in the country that perpetuates the memory of freedom fighters, the first being the ‘Amar Jyoti’ at Jallianwala Bagh. It was installed by Indian Oil Foundation in the Cellular Jail at Port Blair on August 9, 2004. This eternal flame is dedicated to the hundreds of brave Indians who suffered imprisonment in this jail during the freedom struggle.

The structure is cast in bronze and is weatherproof. The 5 ft tall Jyot is surrounded by a 14 ft high structure. It is placed at the entrance of the magnificent Cellular Jail near the Martyrs' Platform. A special room built close to the structure provides continuous supply of gas to keep the flame burning.
