Swarnapureeswarar Temple




Swarnapureeswarar Temple is located at Tiruchemponpalli in Nagapattinam District, Tamil Nadu. The temple can be approached by traveling 10 km from Maliyaduthurai. The temple dates back to the period of the Chola King Aditya I. Belief is that Indra and Kubera worshipped Shiva at this place. Occupying an area of about 2 acres, the temple has one prakaram. The specialty of the temple is its architecture. It is so designed that the sun's rays fall on the sanctum for a period of 11 days from the 7th day of the month of Aries. Inscriptions from the Chola and Maratha period are preserved in the temple. The main festival is the annual Brahmotsavam held in the month of Chittirai (April-May).
