Suru Valley, formed by the catchments area of the
Suru River, is one of the enchanting valleys nestled along the north-eastern foothills of the
Himalayas. The valley lying in the
Ladakh region forms the keystone of
Kargil District in
Jammu and Kashmir.
Perched at an altitude of 3000 m, Suru Valley extends from the Penzella Glacier to south of Kargil, where the Suru River merges with the Botkul River originating from the Botkul Glacier.
The valley has an impressive location, surrounded by snow capped peaks, undulating alpine slopes and awesome glaciers, overlooking wild mountain streams of foaming cascades of pristine water. The towering peaks of Kun (7035 m) and Nun (7135 m), which loom over the skyline in their crystalline majesty, add to its charm.
Inhabitants of this valley are descent of Tibeti-Darad. Agriculture is the main occupation of this people. Wheat, barley, radish, peas, black peas, grapes and millets are the main crops cultivated here.
Kargil, situated 204 km from Srinagar, is the major town in the Suru Valley. Places of tourist interest include
Shergol, Urgyan Dzong and Wakha Rgyal.
State buses, cars and jeeps are available from Kargil to various places in Suru Valley including Sankoo, Panikhar and Parachik.
