Sukhsuptika




Diwali is one of the oldest rituals of Kashmiri Pundits which was celebrated as Sukhsuptika and it finds it mention in Nilmat Puran. Sukhsuptika means sleep with happiness. Celebration begins on Ekadasi and ends on Amavasya. On Amavasya day, all except the sick and children, fast and worship Goddess Lakshmi after sunset. Earthen lamps are lit and kept in temples, road crossings, cremation grounds, river banks, cow sheds, court yards, foot of trees and shops. A sumptuous feast is arranged in the evening in which everybody is invited, irrespective of their status. Lord Narayan is also worshipped on this day. People wear new clothes and listen to music on the next day. Crackers are burst in the night.
