Suhag is a type of folk song sung by unmarried girls in
Punjab. This song expresses a girl’s desires regarding her future in-laws. In a typical Punjabi wedding it is the bride’s parents who choose the groom, not the bride. The girl’s feeling in these matters is expressed in a Suhag.
A Suhag depicts the hopes and aspiration in a girl’s life. It shows her full confidence in her parents in choosing the right husband for her. She always desire to go to a home where she will have a kind and caring mother-in-law, who is always engaged in celebrations and traditional rites. Her father-in-law should be a person of great repute. Her future home should be a prosperous one with lots of buffaloes producing an abundance of milk for her to churn plenty of butter and curd.
