The State Central Library of
Meghalaya is situated in the heart of
Shillong. It is close to the State and Central Government offices and educational institutions.
The library was constructed by the erstwhile government of Assam in the early fifties. It caters to the need of all categories of readers such as students, scholars, researchers, bureaucrats, retired persons, government employees and children.
Major books in the library are in English. Books are also available in other languages like Hindi, Bengali, Assamese, Khasi and Garo. The library also has a number of magazines, newspapers and journals.
The library is opened to the public apart from regular members, who uses it for reading and reference. It also features an auditorium with a capacity of about 890 people.
The State Central Library has other district libraries at Jowai, Nongstoin, Tura and Williamnagar.
