Located on the northern bank of the
Meenachil River in Pala, Lalam Pazhaya Pally is one of the important Marian pilgrimage centers of
Kerala. The construction of this church was started in 1663 by the help of the Tharayil family. In 1962, a gold framed image of the mother was installed in this church.
The church is well known for its novena prayer service, which is done five times on every Saturday. These are all preceded by Eucharistic celebration and are concluded by Eucharistic blessings.
On
Good Friday, devotees assemble in the churchyard and the ‘way of the cross’ is done in a dramatic and memorable way. Thousands of devotees visit this church from all over the country.
