St Mary's Forane Church is located at
Kuravilangad in
Kottayam District. It is under the control of Pala Diocese. The church is also known as Martha Mariam Forane Church. The original church is believed to have been built in 355 AD. The present church was constructed in 1960.
The church enshrines the miraculous statue of Blessed Virgin Mary, which is carved in granites. This statute is locally known as ‘Kuravilangad Muthiyamma.’ The church has an old bell, which bears a hitherto undeciphered inscription.
Kuravilangad Moonnu Nompu, a three day feast at the church, is attended by lot of people from all over Kerala. The highlight is the ceremonial procession held on the second day of the feast. The replica of the vessel used by Prophet Jonah of the OT is taken out in the second day of the feast.
Kuravilangad is in Meenachil taluk, about 22 km north of Kottayam. Ettumanoor Railway Station provides easy access for the devotees to Kuravilangad.
