Srikakulam, the northernmost district in
Andhra Pradesh, was a part of
Visakhapatnam district. A part of Kalinga in the past, Srikakulam was ruled by Gangarajas, Gajapathis,
Vijayanagara Kings, Nawabs and the French.
Srikakulam town, the headquarters, is located on the east bank of the River Nagavali. The district is known to many as Uttarandhra and Kalingandhra.
Srikakulam covers an area of 5,837 sq km of land with a population of 2.5 million. The languages spoken in the region are
Telugu,
Tamil, English and Hindi. It has a tropical climate and receives a rainfall of 1,086 mm.
The pilgrim centers are Sangameswara Temple at Sangam, Bilvamangala Temple, Sri Sita Rama Swamy Temple, and Sri Mukhalingeswara Temple. The major festivals celebrated are
Brahmotsavam in the month of September, and Rathotsavam in October.
Baruva, Telineelapuram, Telukunchi bird sanctuary,
Arasavalli, Mahendra Hills,
Salihundam, Kaviti, and Tekkali are places of tourist importance. The nearest airport is at Visakhapatnam.
