Sri Muthappan Temple is located at
Parassinikadavu on the banks of the
Valapattanam River, in
Kannur District. It is about 20 km away from
Kannur. The chief deity is
Lord Muthappan, who is believed to be the incarnation of
Lord Shiva. The main feature of this temple is that it allows everyone to enter, irrespective of caste, creed and religion. The temple promotes the essence of 'Vasudaiva Kutumbakam' (The whole world is one family.)
This pilgrim center is famous for the Muthappan Theyyam, the ritual dance form of North Kerala. It is performed here daily. Toddy, fish and meat are the usual offerings to this hunter god.
There is also a kathakali club in the temple which will arrange shows on request. Tea, lunch and dinner are supplied free of charge to the devotees by the temple authorities. On the river near the temple, one can take boating which is arranged by the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC). Accommodation is also available. Parassinikadavu Snake Park is another attraction in the vicinity.
Kannur Railway Station is the nearest railhead, about 20 km away. Calicut Airport is 93 km from Kannur.
