Sri Mangalambigai Temple, dedicated to
Lord Shiva, is located at
Melsevur, near
Gingee in
Viluppuram District. Situated on the banks of the Sankarabarani river, the temple's presiding deity is also known as Rishabapureeswarar or Rishabanathar. The temple was built in 928 by Paranthaka Chola I.
The temple has a three-tier rajagopuram, balipeedam (sacrificial altar) and shrines for Lord Ganesh and Lord Muruga. There are also seperate shrines for Sahasralingam, Kasi Viswanthar and navagrahas (the nine planets.) Inscriptions of Chola kings are found on the walls of this temple.
