The headquarters of
Sonpur District, Sonpur is located at the confluence of rivers
Mahanadi and
Tel. It was known as Paschima Lanka in scriptures. The city has a cluster of temples, each having its own story.
Suvarnameru Temple is the prominent attraction. The Nrusimhanath temple and the door-less temple of Gnyanadei Maluni are worth visiting.
The archaeological excavations conducted at Asurgarh near Sonpur give evidence of human settlement dating to 3rd century BC.
