Smirti literally means 'What was remembered'. Smirti is what has been remembered and handed down by tradition. It is distinguished from
Sruti, or direct revelation.
Smirti includes the Sutras, the
Ramayana, the
Mahabharata, the
Puranas, the Dharmasastras, especially the works of Manu and Yajnavalkya and other law givers.
