Sisodias, belonging to the Suryavansa race, were migrated to
Rajasthan from
Gujarat in the mid-7th century. Originally their family was Guhilot, but later Rahap, the son of Karan Singh I, established a junior branch of the Guhilot family at Sisoda, naming his clan Sisodias after the town. He takes the title as 'Rana'.
Sisodias ultimately became the major clan of Mewar, when Rana Hamir Singh of Sisoda ascended the throne as Maharana Hamir Singh I in 1326. The ruler's title changed from Rana to Maharana ('maha' means 'great'.)
