Sharavati River is the shortest west flowing river and one of the prominent rivers of
Karnataka. It is also known as Baraganga or Gerusoppa River. River Sharavati originates in the
Western Ghats. It flows about 95 km in the northwesterly direction before draining into the
Arabian Sea at Honavar.
Sharavati flows over the rocky bed and through the gorges during its course. It has a number of falls of which the mighty Jog Falls, the highest waterfalls in India, is important. There is a hydroelectric project on this site, Mahatma Gandhi Hydro-Electric Station, which was commissioned in 1948.
