Shankaranarayana Temple is located in
Shankaranarayana village, to the east of
Kundapura, in
Karnataka. Shankara is another name for
Shiva and Narayana is
Vishnu. The main deity of the temple is in the form of two Udbhava lingas that look like one. This is one of the rare temples where you can see the coming together of Shankara and Narayana. The naturally formed linga is one feet below the ground, inside the Garbhagudi. The Shankara linga is round in shape and the Narayana Linga is flat with footprints of
Kamadhenu, the holy cow.
The temple has a beautiful bronze image of Harihara. In front of the temple there is a pond called Koti Teertha. Devotees visiting the temple first go round the theertha before entering the temple. Holy water called Suddhamrita Theertha is seen around the Udbhava Linga all throughout the year. A large Bell believed to have been gifted by Tipu Sultan is seen in the front yard of the temple with Portuguese inscriptions.
