Nestled in the scenic
Aravalli Ranges, Sariska is a historic city in
Alwar District. Renowned as the second largest tiger reserve in
Rajasthan, it is famous for the
Sariska National Park.
Also known as Mewat, this former Rajput state has found mention in the great epic
Mahabharata. Legend says that,
Pandavas had visited here during their exile.
Sariska National Park, surrounded by dry deciduous forests and bare grasses, is the main wealth. It houses various rare species of flora and fauna. Other remarkable tourist points are Jai Samand Lake, Vijai Mandir Palace and the Kankawadi Fort. Remnants of 8th and 12th century Jain and Hindu temples can be seen here.
The best time to visit the place is from November to June. Sariska Palace, built by
Maharaja Jai Singh in 19th century, provides comfortable accommodation.
Sariska, with its rich heritage, is 35 km from Alwar, 210 km from Agra and 110 km from Jaipur. Indira Gandhi International Airport is 165 km from here. The city, well linked with road network, is easily accessible from other cities in Rajasthan.
