San Thome Basilica




San Thome Basilica, situated at the south end of Marina Beach, is considered as the second oldest church in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It was named after Saint Thomas, an apostle of Jesus Christ. The Basilica was built over the site where St Thomas' body was buried.

Built in 16th century by the Portuguese, it was converted in to a basilica in 1896. The basilica is decorated with beautiful stained glass which portrays the story of St Thomas. The central hall features 14 wooden plaques depicting scenes from the last days of Jesus Christ. Devotees of every faith and caste visit the basilica to render homage and see the holy shrine.
