Samayapuram Mariamman Temple is a highly revered shrine at
Samayapuram, about 20 km from
Tiruchirapalli, in
Tamil Nadu. The temple enshrines, Mariamman, one of the forms of
Goddess Kali, as the presiding deity. There is also a shrine dedicated to Karuppannasaami a local deity.
Even though the current structure dates back to the 18th century Nayak rulers, the origin of the temple dates to the ancient period.
The main offering of the temple is the Mavilakku Mavu made of jaggery, rice flour, dhal and ghee. Thaipusam is the major festival celebrated here amid much religious fervor.
