Samai dance is performed by the Goan peasant community, with traditional metallic lamps or 'deepaks' from
Goa. The men and women balance these Goan handicrafts on their heads and dance in accordance with the music of the folk instruments such as Ghumat, Samel, Zanj, Shehnai and Surt.
In southern and middle Goa, Samai dance is performed during the Shigmo festival. It is accompanied by slow singing during religious gatherings.
