Saharanpur District




Saharanpur District in Uttar Pradesh has an area of 3,689 sq km and a population of 2.8 million. It is bordered by Shivalik hills in the north-east, the Yamuna in the west, districts of Haridwar in the east and Muzaffarnagar in the south. It forms part of the fertile plains of the rivers Ganges and the Yamuna.

It has now been proved that Saharanpur was inhabited as early as 2000 BC and is connected with the Indus valley civilization. Economy depends mostly on agriculture. About 70% of the land is used for agricultural purpose. Wheat, rice, maize, jawar, bajara, sugarcane, oilseeds, cotton, and jute are the important crops. Cottage industries and sugar industries flourish here. Saharanpur is also well known for its wood carving industry.

Saharanpur District has an average temperature of 23.3oC. The maximum temperature is observed during June and the minimum in January.

Shakumbari Devi Temple, Deoband, Guggha Veer or Gughal, and Nau Gaza Peer are some of the important places.
