Ropni Songs are sung by women working in fields. The practice of singing these songs is prevalent in
Jaunpur District of
Uttar Pradesh.
The word ‘Ropni’ literally means ‘sowing’. Usually the sowing work is performed by the women folk. This work is quite tedious and often tiring. To lighten up the job and break the monotony, the women resort to singing songs.
The Ropni songs are themed around the major events from the past. The second line in these songs always rhymes with the first. In this line there are references to plants, leaves and common agricultural practices.
