Riang tribe of
Tripura favors bamboo as the basic building material for their houses. Tripura being a hilly region these houses are built on large platforms, which also serve as the floor. These platforms are supported by bamboo posts, which extend up providing reinforcement to the roofs.
A typical Riang house is normally rectangular in structure containing a verandah in the front, styled like a balcony, and an open verandah in the rear. Basically, the house is a large single room partitioned into smaller rooms using bamboo boards. Bamboo boards are also used for making the doors and for covering the floors. The roof is of the sloping variety. A log containing notches serves as a ladder to the house.
