Ranthambhore National Park, a part of the
Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve, is about 12 km from
Sawai Madhopur,
Rajasthan. The park is contiguous with the town and Misradhara gate, from where tourists enter the park.
The Chambal River forms the eastern boundary of the park and Banas River flows to the north-east. This 392 sq km park was a private hunting ground for the Maharaj of Jaipur till the mid of 20th century.
Ranthambhore National Park supports a large number of wild species including leopards, caracal, jungle cat, hyena, jackal, sloth bear, wild boar, marsh crocodile, porcupine, common langur, spotted deer, Indian gazelle, sambar deer and nilgai. Besides, variety of migratory, water, and woodland birds are identified.
The park is open to tourists during October-June. Forest rest houses inside the park offer convenient accommodation.
The park is around 145 km from Jaipur, which has the nearest airport, Sanganer Airport. Sawai Madhopur Railway Station serves as the nearest railhead.
