Ramalingeswara Swamy Temple lies on the hillock of
Keesaragutta in
Rangareddy District. It is dedicated to
Lord Shiva and his consorts Bhavani and Sivadurga. According to a legend,
Lord Ram decided to install a
Shivlinga here to get rid of his sin of killing Ravana. Selecting this place, he ordered
Hanuman to bring a Shivlinga from
Varanasi. As Hanuman was late in arriving with the Shivlinga, Lord Shiva himself appeared before Lord Ram and presented a Shivlinga for installation. And so the lingam in the temple is called
Swayambhu Linga. It is also called Ramalingeswara as Lord Ram had installed the lingam. Later, Hanuman returned with 101 lingams from Varanasi. He was upset that his lingam was not installed and he threw them all over the area. One can see several other lingams scattered all over the place outside the temple.
Shivratri is an important festival celebrated here for 7 days. Besides, exhibition and cultural shows are also arranged by Andhra Pradesh tourism and Endowments departments during the festival.
