Rajmata Gayatri Devi




Maharani Gayatri Devi was born in London on May 23, 1919 as the daughter of the Maharaja of Cooch-Behar and Maharani Indira Devi. Gayatri grew up in British India. Her grandfather was Maharaja Sayaji Rao III Gaekwad and her grandmother Maharani Chimnabai of Baroda. Her friends and family fondly call her Ayesha. She was educated in England, Switzerland and Shantiniketan. She is a great admirer of Rabindranath Tagore. She married the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II of Jaipur and became the Maharani of Jaipur.

She is considered to be one of the most beautiful women in the world. Her sense of style and grace is commendable. She was by her husband's side as a military wife in the barracks during the second world war.When the British left India, her husband voluntarily gave up his throne when the country became democratic. She was elected to the Indian Parliament with an astounding majority and served her country for many years. Rajmata Gayatri Devi is very much interested in Polo, and has coached teams in Jaipur. She served in the Indian Parliament for many years. She withdrew from public life following her husband's death.

Maharani Gayatri Devi has written her autobiography, 'A Princess Remembers.' Gayatri Devi embodies the desirable qualities of courage, vision, leadership, service, and steadfastness in love. She worked hard for the advancement of women and to bring the women of Rajasthan out of the purdah.
