Bhagyachandra, a famous king of
Manipur, effectively opposed the attack of Burmese force in 1762. He ruled from 1740 to 1798 and was known with the title of Rajarshi, which means the king who is also an ascetic.
To strengthen and unite Manipur, the king enhanced the relations with the people of hills and plains. He was a patron of art and culture, which helped in the spread of fine arts in Manipur. The king also established the Manipuri dances including Raas Leela and Nata Sankirtan in scientific basis.
