Raibense Dance is a martial dance native to
Birbhum District of
West Bengal. It involves fast and powerful movements, which often appear to be a physical exercise. The performer must follow strict rules and discipline to execute these steps properly.
The dance begins with the performers forming a single line, which then gradually becomes a circle. The dance steps include sequences of hops, jumps and circular movements. In the overall dance, the body should maintain a straight posture.
In course of performance, skills in the use of various weapons are exhibited. A percussion instrument is used for giving the appropriate music for the dance.
Though performed mainly in rural areas, Raibense Dance gains interest in the cities and towns due to the energy and speed involved in its movements.
