Punnagavaneswarar-Bhramapureesar Temple




Punnagavaneswarar-Bhramapureesar Temple is located at Ambar Maakalam near Tiruvarur. The temple is one of the 78 madakkovils built by Gochenkan Chola. The main deity of the temple is Lord Shiva known by the name Punnagavaneswarar. There is a separate sanctum for Goddess Poonkuzhalammai. Dating back to about 2000 years, this ancient temple has a Somaskanda panel behind the shivling. The temple also holds a tank which is said to have been created by Brahma. The sthala vriksham (sacred tree) is punnai and the temple teertham is Bhrama Teertham. Sage Sambandar has glorified this temple through his pathigams. Maasi Magam festival is celebrated in a grand manner. There is a Vishnu temple in the vicinity.
