The Pulayar Kali is a folk dance performed by the women of the Pulaya community of
Kerala. This community, considered as untouchables in the olden days, is involved with the farm work. This dance is performed during the Onam and
Vishu festivals, which mark the beginning of the harvest season.
The dancers of Pulayar Kali wear colored scarves around their heads. Holding sticks and shields, they perform this dance accompanied by traditional songs. These songs depict the scenes from Hindu mythologies.
