If there is one place that can be a source of respite in
Mumbai’s concrete jungle, it is the Priyadarshini Park. Situated in the posh residential area of
Malabar Hill, to the west of Napean Sea Road, this is a park, garden and a sports center, all rolled into one. Spread over an area of 20 acres in a reclaimed piece of land on the seafront, this is a favorite haunt for young, old and the fitness enthusiasts.
This park was created in the late 60’s by an initiative launched by the Malabar Hill Citizens’ Forum to convert this previously junkyard area into something worthwhile. Initially developed as a park, this place now sports a 400-metre Olympic-styled synthetic turf track, four tennis courts, a fully equipped gym and a health club.
There are qualified coaches for various sports disciplines and fitness programs designed for the whole family. At any given time about 1,500 children avail of the sports facilities. The designers of this park made sure to alienate this haven from the sight of the heavy city traffic by building up heavy plantation at the entrance, which also boasts of an interesting Jungle Walk.
With the clean air, tranquil environment and lush greenery, Priyadarshini Park proudly proclaims itself with the motto ‘Blending sports with nature.’
