Pratapgad Fort

Pratapgad, 24 km from Mahabaleshwar, was built by Shivaji Maharaj in 1656. It was built mainly control the rebels in the region.

Pratapgad is admired for its impregnable fortifications and offers a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside, which is at its best in and after the monsoon.

Afzal Khan, a General from the Adilshahi Kingdom of Bijapur (now in Karnataka), was killed here while trying to assassinate Shivaji Maharaj. Shivaji Maharaj built a tomb for him on the outskirts of the fort. An equestrian statue of Shivaji, temples of Bhavani, Mahadev and Hanuman are the main attractions here.
