Pratapgad, 24 km from
Mahabaleshwar, was built by
Shivaji Maharaj in 1656. It was built mainly control the rebels in the region.
Pratapgad is admired for its impregnable fortifications and offers a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside, which is at its best in and after the monsoon.
Afzal Khan, a General from the Adilshahi Kingdom of Bijapur (now in Karnataka), was killed here while trying to assassinate Shivaji Maharaj. Shivaji Maharaj built a tomb for him on the outskirts of the fort. An equestrian statue of Shivaji, temples of Bhavani, Mahadev and Hanuman are the main attractions here.
