Poonamallee

Located in Tiruvallur District, Poovirundavalli, also called Poonamallee, is around 20 km from Chennai on the road leading to Bangalore. This place is famous for the cultivation of jasmine and as the birth place of Thirukatchi Nambi Alwar, a devotee of Varadaraja Perumal, the manifestation of Vishnu as the bestower of boons. The name 'Poonamallee' is derived from the word 'Malli' (Malli means Jasmine, in Tamil). There is an ancient temple for lord Varadaraja Perumal with his consort, Pushpakavalli Thayar.
