Poothotta is a coastal village in
Ernakulam District of
Kerala. It is home to the Poothotta Coir Vyavasaya (Industrial) Co-operative Society, a government owned firm involved in the manufacture of coir products.
The place is located below the sea level. It features an impressive system of dykes and bunds to facilitate paddy cultivation. Some of the major occupations of the local population include boat building, prawn cultivation, sand mining, limestone collection, duck rearing and bamboo basket weaving.
The village features a series of narrow canals that provide an opportunity for the visitors to cruise about in country boats. There is a boat terminal, which connects Ernakulam with
Kottayam and
Alappuzha districts.
Poothotta is home to a
Narayana temple, which is famous for its 13-day annual festival. Another prominent landmark is
Nakshatramana, an activity center featuring the performances of various traditional art forms.
Ernakulam, the district headquarters, is located 20 km from Poothotta.
Ernakulam Junction Railway Station is the nearest railhead.
