Pooran Bhagat is a popular ballad based on a legendary person named Pooran. It depicts the virtues of the spiritual world and compares it with the evils of the material world.
The Pooran Bhagat ballad contains the various stages in the life of Pooran, who was born in a royal family. He was however destined to live a spiritual life owing to the request made by a saint to the king. Owing to a false allegation made by his step-mother he is executed by his father. His life is revived by a saint and he leads the life of a monk. A queen attracted towards him marries him. But Pooran being a spiritual person refuses the attractions of the material world and returns to his saintly life. The ballad further depicts his forgiving nature towards the people who had harmed him.
The Pooran Bhagat theme has become a part of the folk theaters in Punjab and Haryana.
