Ponmalai is a rock situated 4 km from
Tiruchirapalli. It is about 140 ft high. It is named Ponmalai after the Poneswari Amman Temple, which is located on this rock. A
Muruga temple and the Zindha Sha Madarsha Dargah are located here. Nearby attractions include the St Joseph's Church.
The British army used it as a vantage point. They built five large water tanks here in 1927. A Railway workshop is situated on the eastern side of Ponmalai. The Central Jail, where many noted freedom fighters had been jailed, is situated on the western side of Ponmalai.
