Polo is an indigenous fishing implement of
Assam. It is a dome shaped structure made of bamboo strips bonded by flexible cane strips. It contains a short open stem at the top with a diameter of 0.5 feet. The open bottom diametrically measures 2 to 4 feet, while the height varies from 2 to 3 feet.
The fishermen make use of Polo in shallow waters. They hold it by the stem and thrust it into the water with its open end entering the mud. If any fish is trapped inside, it is caught by hand through the stem. The fishermen continue fishing in this manner by moving around in the water. They also sometimes use the ‘julki,’ which is a smaller version of the Polo.
