Pichavaram, situated 15 km east of
Chidambaram, is a picnic spot with plenty of resources. The backwaters of Pichavaram offer water sports such as rowing, kayaking, and canoeing. The area is separated from the sea by a sand bar.
Rare species of plants such as Avicennia and Rhizophora are found at Pichavaram. Various bird species including watershipes, cormorants, egrets, stocks, herons, spoonbills, and pelicans can be viewed. Boating facility is available.
