Pheran

A long loose fitting cloth

Pheran is a long loose fitting gown worn by the people of Jammu and Kashmir. It acts as an overcoat to protect from the chilly weather. Worn in a pair, this gown hangs down below the knees. The underlayer called ‘potsh’ is light white cotton.

Women wear embroidered Pheran, which has wide sleeves, overturned and fringed with brocaded stripes. In case of men, the dress is always plain and has narrow sleeves and a left-side chest-open collar with a kind of lapel or lace emerging from it.

Kangri is a traditional fire pot usually held inside the Pheran to warm the body during winter.
