Perur Patteeswaraswamy Temple is an ancient shrine, situated on banks of Noyyal River, about 7 km west of
Coimbatore, in
Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity here is
Lord Shiva and his consort
Goddess Parvati, known here as 'Patteeswarar' and 'Panchanayaki'. The temple enshrines a
swayambhu Shivling.
Built by Karikala Cholan, the temple is a unique blend of fine sculpture and exquisite architecture. The sanctum seen in the temple is created by the Chola, Hoysala and Vijayanagara rulers. Major point of attraction is the Kanaka Saba or the ‘golden hall’, exquisitely garnished with a gold plated statue of Nataraja showering blessings upon two sages - Gowmuni and Pattimuni.
The gopurams and pillars of the hall have exquisitely carved out sculptures highlighting the Dravidian architecture. There are beautiful statues of Gajasamhara, Virabhadra, Bikshadana and Goddess Saraswati with Veena.
Pilgrims throng to the temple to pay homage to their ancestors. There is popular belief that the mortal remains of the dead turn into white stones after about 144 days.
Painguni Utram is celebrated here with much pomp and splendor.
