Pechiparai Dam, built across the Kodayar River, is situated in
Pechiparai, about 11 km north of Kulasekaram, in
Kanyakumari District of
Tamil Nadu. It is 45 km from
Nagercoil and 75 km from
Kanyakumari. With a catchment area of 204 sq km, the dam has a length of 425 m and a height of 120 m.
Built during the rule of Maharaja Sri Moolam Thirunal, Pechiparai Dam was designed by the European engineer Minchin in the pattern of Periyar Dam in Madurai District. The reservoir is surrounded by dense forests, with ravines and plant life of various sorts. Besides, it is home to various animals such as tiger, elephants and deer.
