Situated opposite the Shah Hamdan mosque and across
the Jhelum is the Pathar Masjid, the biggest surviving
Mughal structure in
Jammu and Kashmir. Its façade consists of nine arches which are noted for their horizontal construction. Built in 1623 by Noor Jahan, the mosque was however never used for prayers as the high priests boycotted the structure, describing it as a desecrated building. The construction of the mosque was supervised by the well known Mughal historian-architect Malik Hyder Chaudhary.
Pather Masjid is about 6 km away from Srinagar city. Srinagar can be approached by road from Jammu (305 km) which passes through the
Jawahar Tunnel. The nearest railhead for the city is
Jammu Tawi (305 km).
