Pallukali




Pallukali, a dramatic visual art, is popular in Chittoor Taluk in Palakkad District. It is mainly performed by the Pariah community. Nandanar, who was refused admittance into the temple, but lastly got himself admitted through high devotion and won many devotees to him, is presented through Pallukali with the help of music and dancing. At first, an artist in the costume of Ganapathy appears on the stage. He is followed by several other characters such as panakaran (rich man) and his two wives, and a kolkaran. The leader sings a song in Kavu style. Then the performers on the stage start acting and singing the dialogues, according to the meaning of the song. The male characters have costumes similar to those of Kathakali. The female characters don dhotis and upper cloth.
