The Nun Kun Massif in the
Great Himalayan Range, is the highest peak in
Ladakh, which is located at an altitude of about 7,077 m. It is easily accessible through the
Kargil -
Padum road, about 70 km south of Kargil. The main approach is either from Tangole or Gulmadong. The massif consists of several peaks. Most important among them are Nun (7,135 m) and
Kun (7,087 m), which can be reached from Suru Valley.
A gompa called Rangdum is there on a hillock overlooking the marshy plains in Zanskar valley. Expeditions to Nun-Kun mainly take off from the Panikhar village, which is the base for long treks towards Kashmir and Kishtwar.
